CIMB Thai Bank Public Company Limited, previously known as BankThai Public Company Limited, was established in 1998 with the Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) as the major shareholder. On 5 November 2008, CIMB Bank Berhad became the largest shareholder in BankThai and on 4 May 2009, the Bank completed the registration of its new name: “ธนาคารซีไอเอ็มบี ไทย จำกัด (มหาชน)” in Thai and “CIMB Thai Bank Public Company Limited” in English. This name change reflects the transition of BankThai from being an independent company to becoming a member of the CIMB Group.
CIMB Group operates as a universal bank offering a full range of financial products and services. We are Malaysia’s second largest financial servicesprovider and the fifth largest in Southeast Asia by total assets, with a market capitalisation of approximately US$6 billion.
At present, our main markets are Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, countries in which we have full universal banking capabilities. Our presence covers Southeast Asia and major global financial entres, as well as countries with which our Southeast Asian customers have significant business and investment dealings.
CIMB Group operates its business through three main brand entities, CIMB Bank, CIMB Investment Bank and CIMB Islamic. CIMB Bank is the Group’s commercial banking arm while CIMB Islamic is its global Islamic banking and finance franchise. Both CIMB Bank and CIMB Islamic offer their retail banking services to over 4.7 million customers on a dual banking platform in 367 branches in Malaysia.
CIMB Group is owned by Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings Bhd, which is listed on Bursa Malaysia with a market capitalisation of almost US$7 billion. The Group has over 36,000 employees located in 11 countries.
